Yesterday we walked with fellow photographers in the lovely Brazos Bend State Park, which is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Houston. Аt the very beginning of our hike, we freezed on the shore of one of the lakes, since we’ve catched a sight of a heron during hunting. All of the following images are taken during one hour.
A jump:

… and pulled out a crawfish.

“Сrawled”
Male Yellow-crowned night-heron with recently caught crawfish. Some herons do not eat their prey on the spot of fishing, but they try to fly over to the solid shore, since there is a small chance, that the prey will slip away. In this case this was completely correct solution - crawfish was escaped from the beak of heron three times before it was swallowed. If this matter occurred in the water, heron will be still hungry.

Heron has got a huge-size-crawfish:

It kicked:

It pushed:

But nothing helped and crawfish has gone to his last trip:

Difficulties of swallowing:

That meal was not enough for heron. It has gone for second helping with beautifully flowing feathers:

Rush to duckweed:

… and nothing. What a shame!

Having flown more to the right, Yellow-crowned has decided to try luck on a new place. Tracing a crawfish:

Neck-shot:

And again the heron has come up without a catch. Very dissatisfied:

Cursing heron:

Soon it has disappeared, having left for us just the images:

My favorite bird! Great photos!

Spectacular post. The story-with-photos is a perfect touch and just enhanced the experience. My favorite photo is the ‘rush to duckweed’ shot — such amazing movement, and in such clarity!

Lovely set of photos! Thanks so much for sharing.

Absolutely Magnificent! Both the bird (looks rather like a young one) and the pictures. Makes me miss Texas, but I wouldn’t be in Houston at this time of year for anything, unless it was absolutely necessary.
( like my favorite cousin needed me for anything)
>> Катрин: Thank you!
Yes, I agree about Houston - it’s 92F already and we didn’t hit a summer yet. It’s tough, but unfortunately I cannot relocate for awhile.

What a gorgeous set! What kind of camera were you using?
>> Катрин: Thank you! I’ve been using two cameras - Canon 10D and Canon EOS 5D. 10D on a tripod with 300mm F/2.8 lens + tele converter, and 5D with Canon 100-400 lens handheld.

May 12th, 2008 at 10:50 am
These are pictures of exceptional standard and their interest is enhanced, especially in the first four, because the bird is actually doing something.
Had you thought of syndicating them? I once met a man who photographed a wren that had nested in the mouth of a stuffed pike, it was feeding young. The proceeds got him a holiday in South Africa - just a thought.
>> Катрин: Well, it’s sounds tempting, but I have no idea where to start 8-)
May 12th, 2008 at 10:51 am
In truth, neither have I; but you could approach a news agency or birding magazine.

Bruce - thanks for stopping by!
BTW, in your set of photos I saw a group portrait (the one where all of us pointed lenses to that little heron :). Do you mind if I’ll save it for myself, just for personal record?
May 13th, 2008 at 10:32 am

May 23rd, 2008 at 1:56 am
May 23rd, 2008 at 8:32 am
